Cricket:Twenty-20 World Cup Tournament begins in Sri Lanka today

The Twenty-20 World Cup Cricket Tournament begins in Sri Lanka today. In the opening match at Hambantota, hosts Sri Lanka will take on Zimbabwe in a Group "C' fixture at 7.30 P.M. India will begin their campaign against Afghanistan tomorrow. Our correspondent reports that the fourth T-20 World Cup is dubbed to be the most open one ever. All 12 teams are said to have a chance – yes, even the minnows. In the short format of 20 overs, even a single player, a single partnership, one good spell can turn the game on its head. The easiest of the four groups in the league stage is Group A, with India, England and Afghanistan. Both India and England are expected to make it to the super 8 stage easily. Group B has Australia, West Indies and Ireland. No one expects an upset here, but Ireland can sometimes throw up surprises. Group C has hosts Sri Lanka, South Africa and Zimbabwe, and is the toughest group of all. Group D has Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand, another group where there can be an upset, given the fact that Bangladesh is a test playing team and has been performing well in longer duration games. There will be no opening ceremony at Hambantota today – just the match between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. And even without the glitzy fanfare, cricket lovers will be glued to the action for what promises to be a cracker of a match.
