Cracker powder used in Agra blast, motive unclear

In Uttar Pradesh, the low-intensity blast at a private hospital in Agra was triggered by a mixture normally used in firecrackers. Police said that as per preliminary report of the Forensic Science Laboratories, Agra, use of potassium chloride, sulphur and charcoal were found in the explosives while six nine volt batteries and a crude Improvised Explosive Device were used to trigger the blast. However, the motive behind the attack is not yet clear.

AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that the National Security Guards, NSG and the Anti-Terrorist Squad, ATS and Special Task Force, STF of State police, have started their investigation into the blast case. No arrest or detention has been made till now in this connection. Police has lodged FIR against unknown persons at Hariparvat police station. Police has also hiked the reward amount from 50 thousand to one lakh rupees for giving clues to the explosion.

After visiting the blast site and meeting injured persons, Union Minister of state for Home, Jitendra Singh has announced a financial assistance of 50 thousand rupees each to the injured from Prime Minister Relief Fund. He said, Centre will provide all assistance to the state government to nab the culprits involved in the blast. The Mayawati government has already announced an ex-gratia payment of one lakh rupees to the injured.

Inspector General of police, Agra Range, PK Tiwari has said that the investigating agencies in their preliminary findings, have said that it could be the handiwork of the local criminals but probe was underway to find whether there was any link with terrorist organisations. An alert has been sounded in the state and security has been stepped up in and around the Taj Mahal and other monuments in the district.
