CPN(Maoist) call nationwide strike in Nepal

In Nepal, Unified CPN(Maoist) have called a nationwide general strike on Sunday after five people including a policeman were killed and nearly three dozen injured in clashes between security forces and squatters in Kailali district. The clash occurred after the security personnel tried to evict landless squatters from Dudhejhari forest in Baliya village in western Nepal. The opposition Maoists have condemned the killing of squatters and demanded adequate compensation for the families of the killed people and free medical treatment of the injured. It also demanded an independent enquiry into the police firing and punishment of the guilty.<br/><br/>In a press statement, the government said security forces had to open fire after the squatters attacked police forces with stones and bricks, in which one policeman was killed.<br/><br/>Normal life in Kalilai, Bardiya, Banke and Dang districts remained disrupted today following a bandh called by the Maoist affiliated organizations to protest against police action in Kailali district.<br/>
