The CPIM Central committee has called upon the Centre to bring food security legislation to ensure universal right to food. After three days meeting of the central committee in Kolkata on Saturday, the party General Secretary Mr. Prakash Karat also demanded that more essential commodities should be included in the public distribution system through central government subsidies. In its resolution, the Central committee strongly criticised the Government for its alleged failure to control the price rise of essential commodities which has led to high food inflation. The CPIM also strongly opposed the recommendations of the Parikh committee to decontrol petrol and diesel prices and disinvestment of profitable Public Sector Undertakings. However, Mr. Karat welcomed recommendation of Ranganath Mishra Commission suggesting reservation for minorities in Government jobs.

Prakash Karat also condemned the attempts by the Shiv Sena and the MNS to intimidate film actor Shah Rukh Khan and other personalities for speaking out their mind. He said the Shiv Sena and MNS are engaged in destructive competition to uphold their stand that Mumbai is only for Marathi-speaking people, and the latest example is the Shah Rukh Khan case. He termed it as their disruptive game after having failed to secure support in the recent assembly elections.
