The CPI-M has won both the seats of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Shimla Municipal Corporation's elections while the BJP which had eight seats has improved its performation by winning 12 seats in the 25-member corporation.The Congress has secured seats of ten wards which is five seats less that its earlier strength in the corproation. The seats of three wards have also gone in favour of the CPI-M. The Shimla Municipal Coporation elections this time saw the direct vote for the post of mayor and deputy mayor for the first time. Earlier the elected councillors used to elect the mayor and deputy mayor.It may be mentioned that ever since the first elected body in Shimla was installed in 1986, the Congress party had swept all the earlier five municipal corproation polls.
