Researchers in the Bengaluru based Indian Institute of Science have found that the COVID-19 virus is mutating faster than before. IISC researchers have carried out a comprehensive proteo-genomic investigation of viral samples obtained from COVID-19 positive individuals in the city.
”
”It was found then that three COVID positive patients from Bengaluru had 27 mutations in their genomes. This is more than the national average of 8.4 and global average of 7.3 mutations. The study published in the Journal of Proteome Research, has identified multiple mutations and unique proteins in isolates of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. It has also shown that the host produces several proteins of their own as their body launches an immunological defense in response to the viral attack.
