In Ukraine, a local court has ordered the detention of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko during her trial on charges of abuse of office. Until now, she was required to remain in Kiev, but had not been placed in detention. Ms Tymoshenko, a prominent opposition leader, is accused of illegally agreeing to a 10-year contract to buy natural gas from Russia. She denies the charges and criticised the trial as an attempt by President Viktor Yanukovych to bar her from elections.
