A local Mumbai court today granted interim bail to the captain of merchant vessel MSC Chitra, which collided with another cargo ship off the city's coast. The captain, Mandeleno Ranjit Martin, had sought bail after an FIR was registered against him. The prosecution has sought time till the 18th of this month to file their reply on the bail plea. Principal Judge of the sessions court M L Tahalayani, while adjourning the matter, has directed the city police not to arrest the captain till then. Two Panamanian vessels MSC Chitra and MV Khalija-111 had collided off the Mumbai coast on Saturday resulting in an oil spill.An FIR was registered following the incident against the captain and the crew members of both the vessels under relevant sections of the IPC and Environment Protection Act.Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has started conducting random checks of seafood items in civic markets to ensure they are hygienic and free of any contamination. Checks have been conducted only in affected areas like Colaba, Fort, Nariman Point and others from where most of the sea food is produced. BMC Assistant Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kamat informed that the civic body has taken samples of sea food items like Bombay Duck and Prawns. He said these samples have been sent to labs for testing and reports will come within four days. Kamat said the process will continue at least for few more days.AIR correspondent reports, the Maharashtra Transport Minister Vikhe Patil is likely to survey the cargo ship MSC Chitra later today.
