Countrywide programmes to mark National Voters' Day

The first ever National Voters Day will be observed today. The President Mrs Pratibha Devi Singh Patil will distribute Electors Photo Identity Cards to five newly eligible voters at a function in New Delhi to mark the occasion. The newly enrolled voters will be given a badge with the slogan 'Proud to be a voter – Ready to Vote,' during the felicitation ceremony. They will also be administered a pledge. The cabinet had last week given its nod for declaring the 25th of January as Voters Day. Newly eligible voters and those who are registered with Jan 1, 2011 as the qualifying date will be felicitated in over eight lakh polling station areas across the country. A Multi media campaign will be undertaken to popularise electoral participation. The Chief Election Commissioner Dr. S.Y. Qureshi said the observance of National Voters' Day will give the youth a sense of citizenship; empowerment, pride and participation as also inspire them to exercise their franchise. He was addressing an international conference on best electoral practices in New Delhi yesterday.
