The Country’s first floating library was today launched in Sundarbans of West Bengal for the people residing on the fringes of the Mangrove forest. A local NGO the Southern Health Improvement Samity in collaboration with the state Sarva Sikha Mission inaugurated first of its kind floating library on a motorized boat. The Union Minister of State for Tourism Mr. Sultan Ahmed inaugurated the library at Patharpratima of Sundarban today. Initially, the library will cater to the needs of people of seven to eight islands in the Patharpritama block. AIR Kolkata correspondent reports that the floating library has been launched with 4,000 books supplied by the Sarva Sikha Mission and gradually the number of books will be raised to 10,000. The books include both reference and texts up to the secondary level. The floating library will anchor at one island every week and no charge will be imposed on the villages for using the reading facility and borrowing books from there.
