In five years time, the country will have 25 thousand kilometers of pipeline for transportation of Natural Gas criss-crossing the entire nation. Announcing this at a function in New Delhi today, Chairman of Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, Mr L Mansingh said that there is a need to increase transportation of petroleum and petroleum products via pipelines as road transportation are risky. He called upon all stakeholders for coordinated efforts to ensure safety in transfer of hazardous petroleum products by roads. The country has eleven thousand kilometers of pipeline for natural gas and only ten thousand kilometers for petroleum products. Stating that the country will have 5 million vehicles running on CNG in the next five years compared to the present 1 million, Mr Mansingh said that steps are being taken to not fill CNG in vehicles fitted with unauthorised CNG kits to minimise risk of any accident.
