Country set for record wheat production this year

India is poised for a record wheat production this year at 80.98 million tonnes which is slightly higher than last year's 80.68 million tonnes. But, overall foodgrain production is likely to dip by 7 per cent due to fall in rice and coarse cereal output owing to poor monsoon last year. <br/>According to Government's latest foodgrain estimates, the food grain production in the year 2009-10 is estimated at 218.19 million tonnes. The latest advance estimates based on the feed back from the states and other available sources of information, pegs the rice production at 89.31 million tonnes. The latest advance estimates are slightly higher than 216.85 million tonnes in the second advance estimates of production of major crops. The oil seeds production is estimated at 25.41 million tonnes. The pulses production is expected to fall 14 per cent below target at 14.77 million tonnes.
