Costa Rica's presidential election will go into a runoff after Fabricio Alvarado of Conservative won the first round but failed to secure enough votes to win outright. He will face Carlos Alvarado of the centre-left Citizen's Action Party in the second round on 1st April. <br/><br/>The election was dominated by the issue of same-sex marriage, after a court ruled that it should be recognised. Fabricio Alvarado surged ahead after promising to oppose the ruling. With almost all the ballots counted, the Fabricio had 24.8 per cent of the vote, while Carlos had 21.8 per cent.
