In Bangladesh, the main opposition party the BNP has announced a two day agitation programme to protest against the filing of a corruption case against its Chairperson and Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Dhaka on Tuesday, BNP acting Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir said that the party will organize a demonstration in front of its headquarters in Dhaka on Wednesday which will be followed by nation- wide demonstrations on Thursday. The country’s Anti-Corruption Commission filed an FIR on Monday against Khaleda Zia and three others for allegedly using money from undisclosed sources to buy land for a charity organisation named after her late husband Ziaur Rahman. According to the ACC officials, the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist party is the Chairperson of the Zia Charitable trust which had brought land in a locality of Dhaka city for 8.4 million rupees (12.5 Million taka) and there was no valid source of income for a part of this fund. A Dhaka court today has taken cognizance of the FIR filed against Khaleda Zia and three others and has asked the investigation officer to submit a probe report by October 10th this year.AIR correspondent reports, the BNP has decided to take to the streets to protest the case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission against its Chairperson Khaleda Zia. The two day demonstrations being organizing by the party is also aimed at registering their protest against an arrest warrant issued on Monday by a Dhaka court against party senior Vice Chairperson and Khlaeda Zia’s elder son Tarique Rehman in a money laundering case. Tarique Rehman is also one of the key accused in the August 21 2004 grenade attack case. Earlier in June this year, Khaleda Zia’s younger son Arafat Rahman Koko who is abroad was sentenced to six years in jail in absentia on charges of laundering money obtained as bribe. As the BNP top leadership is faced with an array of court cases, the party is intensifying its agitation on the streets to protest against the cases which it claims has no genuine basis and is politically motivated.
