Controversial deal between Antrix and Devas terminated

The government has cancelled the Antrix-Devas S band spectrum deal. Briefing newsmen in New Delhi today following the Cabinet Committee on Security meeting Chaired by the Prime Minister, Law Minister Mr.Veerappa Moily said that the commercial arm of ISRO had entered into a deal with a private agency Devas multi-medium for the use of S band spectrum in 2005. The CCS maintained that it cannot provide the orbit slot in S band to Antrix for commercial activities. Mr. Moily said that the committee took note of the fact the government policies with regard the allocation of spectrum have undergone a change and there has been increased demand for allocation of spectrum for national needs including the needs of Defence, para-military forces, railways and other public utility services apart from the needs of the country's strategic requirement. Replying a volley of questions Mr. Moily said that the government is confident of standing the legal tests in the court of law and has taken all aspects into consideration before taking the decision.
