Control of Senate and House of Representatives will go to Democrats and Republicans respectively: Opinion polls

Even as the clock ticks to the US Congressional Elections, scheduled for the 2nd of next month, Democrats led by President Barack Obama are campaigning aggressively to deal with anti-incumbency factor while the Opposition Republicans are turning their guns on the Governing party in Washington for the dire state of the economy. With just five days to the elections, opinion polls by various agencies have predicted that the Republicans will gain control of the House of Representatives while they suggest that the Senate may be retained by the Democrats, by a very slender margin. AIR correspondent Sanjay Ghosh reporting from Las Vegas in Nevada says the two parties that have dominated the political arena in America has been shaken by the emergence of the Tea Party, an offshoot of the Republican Party. He adds that the Tea Party, which runs on anti-establishment sentiment, is creating ripples among the political establishment, with a far more conservative outlook and is advocating limited governance in public affairs, which seems to have caught the fancy of a section of the voters. President Obama has used various platforms including participating in a comedy news programme on Thursday evening attempting to reach out to voters highlighting the achievements in the first two years in office. In a frank admission on the satirical new Programme ‘The Daily Show,’ President Obama acknowledged that the people were frustrated but said Government had done many things that people do not know about. Seeking to defend himself against criticism on various counts, the President said that the last two years were the toughest two years since the great depression in 1930.The Opposition lead by Head of the Republican National Committee Michael Steel have listed state of the economy, loss of jobs, Speaker of the House of Representatives Ms. Nancy Pelosi as the three big problems in this election.AIR correspondent says that out of 435 seats up for grabs in the House of Representatives, which is the lower house, approximately 350 seats have an expected outcome and race is to win the 80 odd seats where there toss ups between the Democrats and Republicans. The elections to one third of the 100 seats of the Senate and 37 Governor posts are being held simultaneously.
