Contours of political solution to the Kashmir problem are likely to emerge in the next few months: Chidambaram

The Home Minister Mr P Chidambaram has said that the contours of a political solution to the Kashmir problem are likely to emerge in the next few months. He said this while addressing a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry in New Delhi on Thursday. During the discussions on matters relating to Jammu & Kashmir, Mr Chidambaram said that while the first and second reports of the group of interlocutors for the states dealt with confidence-building measures, he has asked them to now focus on finding the contours of a political solution. He asserted that the Kashmir issue is a political issue for which a political solution must be found. Mr Chidambaram, however said that, peace and good governance are pre-requisites for reaching a political solution. He pointed out that the situation in the state has improved considerably after the Government announced the 8-point Plan for the state. He said that this process must be strengthened. Mr Chidambaram also said that space must be allowed for peaceful protests. He said governance and delivery on the ground must improve. He also said that visible presence of security forces must be reduced. On the suggestions by the members for amending the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, Mr Chidambaram said that a proposal in this regard is under consideration of the Government. He also informed the members about the steps taken for the rehabilitation of Kashmiri migrants.
