In Odisha, continuous rain in northern region of the state due to depression over Bay of Bengal has increased water level in major rivers like Brahmani, Baitarani, Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha. They are flowing above the danger level at many places. Eight districts of the state Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Dhenkanal, Angul, Mayurbhanj and Balasore are experiencing fresh flood situation with a large number of villages marooned in the flood water. The main road between Keonjhar and Bhubaneswar has been cut-off in flood water and thousands of vehicles are staranded on both the sides of the road. The state government has asked the collectors of concerned districts to evacuate people from low lying areas as flood water could submerge many places in the northern region. Engineering teams have been rushed to these districts to check possible breaches on river embankments, while collectors have been asked to keep relief materials ready for any eventuality. According to Bhubaneswar Meterological Centre, the depression now lies about 50 km south east of Balasore. Under its impact, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at most places of north and south Odisha during the next 24 hours. Warning signal number three has been hoisted in all the ports of Odisha and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as the condition will be very rough. Meanwhile, the Odisha Government has sent a memorandum to the Centre informing Rs 2121 crore loss incurred in the current flood in 19 of the 30 districts. A Central team is likely to visit the state soon to assess the damage and crop loss due to the devastating flood.
