Contingency plan to produce 2.78 million tonne additional pulses in rabi season

Government has prepared a contingency plan to produce 2.78 million tonnes of additional pulses in the Rabi Season of 2011-12. According to an official release, an additional allocation of 80 crore rupees has been made to achieve this target. The additional production will be made through area expansion and productivity enhancement and is aimed to offset the loss of Khariff season.

Pulses covered under the scheme are pigeon pea, gram, pea and lentil. As per the current coverage of area under pulses during Kharif season, there is a shortfall of over 10 lakh hectares of area under pulses which might lead to a shortfall of nearly 0.70 million tonnes.
