Container liner service between India and Sri Lanka was flagged off today from the Thuthukudi V O C Port in Tamilnadu, by the Port Trust Vice Chairman S Natarajan. The twice weekly container service will be operated on all Sundays and Wednesdays between Thuthukudi and Columbo. The liner has a capacity of hauling upto 1000 containers.<br/><br/>Later, speaking to media persons, Natarajan announced that preparations are on to start a passenger service from Thuthukudi to the temple town of Rameswaram and Thiruvananthapuram, in the nearby Kerala state. He revealed that the exercise of inviting expression of interest was already on.<br/><br/>Natarajan also said that the depth of the Thuthukudi port was being increased and within three years the port would become capable of handling very large container vessels.
