Today is National Consumer Rights Day. The day is marked to generate awareness among consumers about their rights and existence of redressal agencies. It was on this day in 1986 that the consumer protection act received assent of the President of India.
AIR correspondent Gargi Roy reports that the Act provides for protecting consumer rights by bringing all goods and services under its purview. It also ensures the consumers certain rights such as right to safety, right to consumer education, right to be informed, right to be heard and right to seek redressal in case of grievances. The theme of this year's National Consumer Day is "Financial Literacy". Department of Consumer Affairs, the nodal central Government department for protection of consumer rights and welfare has recently undertaken a joint publicity campaign with RBI to spread information about fake notes and mobile banking among consumers. The Government has also passed legal metrology bill in the last session of Parliament to strengthen the hands of state governments.
