Consultations held for comprehensive electoral reforms, says govt

The government has conducted regional consultations with various stakeholders to carry out comprehensive electoral reforms.

These consultations were held at Bhopal, Kolkata , Mumbai, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Bengalore and Guwahati with stakeholders including leaders of different political parties, legislators, legal luminaries, representatives of NGOs and eminent persons.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Law Minister Salman Khurshid said these consultations were done on the basis of recommendations of a core committee on electoral reforms which was constituted in October 2010.

He said main talking points of committee includes de- criminalisation of politics, funding of elections regulation of political parties and conduct and better management of elections.
