Conspirator of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks David Headley to plead guilty in US court

Pakistani-American David Coleman Headley, a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative charged with conspiring in the Mumbai terror strike, will plead guilty before a US court today. A court notice said a change of plea hearing has been set scheduling David Coleman Headley before US District Judge Harry Leinenweber. A routine status hearing was scheduled for Headley on 23rd March.
49-year-old Headley is charged with conspiring in the Mumbai terror strike and planning attack on a Danish newspaper. Mr Headley had so far pleaded not guilty to the charges and has remained in federal custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Chicago since he was arrested in October, 2009. If convicted, Headley faces maximum penalty of life imprisonment or death. However, Headley's cooperation in the investigation is seen as a way to escape death penalty.
Meanwhile, Indian security experts have expressed the concern that plea bargaining by Headley may lead to a lighter sentence for him. Quoting official sources, PTI said that a lenient sentence is a matter of concern for India and may give credence to the suspicion that he was an American agent.
