Congress wins Maha, Arunachal; fractured verdict in Haryana

The ruling Congress-NCP alliance in Maharashtra has stormed back to power for the third time in a row. It has registered a landslide victory in Arunachal Pradesh. However, the party fell short of a majority in Haryana. The Congress-NCP alliance, which has been ruling in Maharashtra for the past 10 years, has won 144 seats in the 288-member Assembly. The party needs one more seat for a simple majority. The saffron combine got 90 seats which is 26 seats less than their tally in 2004. The Raj Thackrey led MNS which made its debut in the Assembly by winning 13 seats played the spoil sport for the Shiv Sena-BJP combine.In Arunachal Pradesh the stage is set for the formation of yet another Congress government after the party swept the assembly polls. The Party gained absolute majority after claiming 42 of the 60 seats. Our correspondent reports that UPA allies at the Centre NCP and Trinamul Congress managed five seats each.In Haryana, the Congress has emerged as the single largest party winning 40 seats, six short of a majority. Congress sources in Chandigarh said, the Haryana Chief Minister Mr. Bhupinder Singh Hooda will stake his claim to form the next government today. He will meet the Governor Mr. Jagannath Pahadia with letters of support from six independent MLAs.The Congress says, its victory in the assembly polls is an endorsement of the policies of the UPA Government.The BJP has described the election results in the three states as disappointing. The Communist Party of India has said the election results are on expected lines.
