The Indian National Congress will contest in all the 87 Assembly seats in the upcoming Assembly Elections in Jammu and Kashmir. It will have no pre poll alliance with its current coalition partner National Conference or any other political party in the State. The State Assembly Elections are scheduled to be held later this year.
Addressing a news conference at Jammu today, AICC General Secretary and In charge of Jammu and Kashmir Affairs Ambika Soni said, the party high command has decided to go all alone in the upcoming Assembly Elections which are likely to be held in the October November this year. AICC General Secretary said that the candidates for the constituencies will be announced after deliberations are held in all the upcoming Party Conventions in the 22 districts of the State. She said that the party has taken the decision in view of the enthusiasm of the party workers in the State. Mrs Soni said, the party observed that people of Jammu and Kashmir are looking for some alternative representatives.
Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad who was present in the press conference said that in a democratic setup when a party does not get clear majority in elections, the coalition becomes inevitable while elections need to be contested independently with party’s own agenda and manifestos.
