Congress sets to retain power in Mizoram

Congress is poised to win the Mizoram assembly polls. As counting is on, the party has won 14 seats so far. It is also leading in 10 other constituencies. Opposition Mizoram Democratic Alliance – MDA – has won two seats and leading in 2 constituencies in the 40 member assembly. Others are leading in one.

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla has won both the Serchhip and Hrangturzo reserved constituencies defeating his nearest Mizoram Democratic Alliance candidates. In Serchhip he defeated three terms former MLA Lalramzuava by a margin of 734 votes in Serchhip reserved constituency.

Congress leader and Minister for Food and Civil Supplies H. Rohluna has won the Lengteng reserved constituency defaeting his nearest MDA candidate L. Thangmawia by a narrow margin of over 100 votes. The party candidate John Siamkunga defeated his nearest Zoram Nationalist Party's candidate J. Lalchhuana by a margin of over 1600 votes in South Tuipui reserved constituency. The congress candidate and Home Minister R. Lalzirliana has won the Tawi resreved seat defeating the only female candidate Lalmalsawmi of the opposition MDA. Congress has also won Tuivawl, Palak, Lunglei South and South Tuipui reserved seats among others.

Opposition Mizoram Democratic Alliance has won the Saiha reserved constituency. The party candidate Dr. K. Beichhua defeated his nearest congress rival S. Hiato by a margin of 222 votes in Saiha reserved constituency.
