Congress President indicates no rollback on fuel pricing

The Congress President Mrs Sonia Gandhi today backed the Finance Minister on Budget presented in parliament last week. This is a hint by the party chief that there is not much possibility of a roll back in the petroleum price hike. Addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting in New Delhi today, Mrs Sonia Gandhi complemented Mr Pranab Mukherjee for presenting a budget which is in public interest. Briefing reporters after the CPP meeting, party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said that revision in fuel prices is in the national interest and there is no question of reversing the move. He said that this hike will in no manner affect governments fight against inflation.<br/>The Congress President said that addressing the issue of food crisis is the foremost priority of the government and it has responded to this pressing concern with all resources at command. She urged the states to ensure proper functioning of Public Distribution System with suitable measures to deal with hoarders and black marketers. Describing the Food Security Bill as one of the most important legislations, the Congress President affirmed that it would also be tabled in the ongoing session of Parliament. Mrs Gandhi said the social security fund for workers will soon become operational with an emphasis on agriculture, rural development, infrastructure and social empowerment.<br/><br/>Calling the Left Wing extremism a major challenge, Mrs Gandhi said that government is committed to address it both at developmental level and from law and order perspective. She said enough funds have been provided in the Budget for an integrated action plan to combat this menace.<br/><br/>Condemning the terror attacks in Pune and Kabul, in which a number of Indians got killed, she cautioned that there are forces operating both outside and inside the country determined to destroy the bonds of social harmony and economic progress of India. She reiterated that government is resolved to fight these forces.<br/><br/>Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's budget proposals including reimposition of the base tax on crude petroleum and the subsequent increase by oil companies of prices of petrol and diesel have triggered demands for a rollback of the hike even from a section of the Congress' allies in the government. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had earlier ruled out a rollback in the hike of fuel prices.<br/><br/><br/>
