Congress President accepts Maharashtra CM's resignation

Putting an end to the speculations on the political situation in Mumbai, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has accepted Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan's resignation. Mrs. Gandhi has also asked Mr Chavan to submit his resignation to the Governor. According to sources, the Chief Minister is likely to submit his resignation to the Governor shortly.Ashok Chavan had offered to quit following his alleged role in the Adarsh Housing Society scam. It was stated that three of his relatives, including his mother-in-law owned flats in the society which was meant for war widows and veterans. The decision to accept the resignation came minutes after an inquiry report was submitted to the Congress President by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A K Antony.Meanwhile, Congress observers are likely to arrive in Mumbai this afternoon to take a decision on the next Chief Minister. The observers will meet the MLAs and the decision regarding the next Chief Minister is likely to be taken by this evening.According to political analysts the frontrunners to replace Chavan are Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Union Science and Technology Minister Prithviraj Chavan.
