Congress not in favour of more than 18 to 20% of tax? under GST Bill: Jairam Ramesh

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has said that his party is not in favour of more than 18 to 20% of tax? under GST Bill. Talking to media persons in Lucknow today, he said that GST is a constitution amendment bill which can not be passed in Rajya Sabha without support of Congress. He said that Congress is also against 1% proposed surcharge in the GST which is at the behest of Gujrat and some other states.

He stressed that Congress favours giving compensation to local and municipal bodies which they would otherwise lose if GST comes into existence, whereas the GST envisages only to compensate states and not to local bodies separately. Besides, there should be a dispute redressal system to resolve issues arising between two states and or between state and centre, he added. Congress believes that 'Goods and Services Tax' GST should be 'Good and Simple Tax', but GST of PM Narendra Modi and FM Arun Jaitley is neither Good nor Simple, Ramesh said.

AIR correspondent reports that talking about Land Acquisition Amendment bill, Jairam Ramesh said that the Act which was passed in 2013 with consensus has now been presented with 15 amendments by BJP. The Congress along with other opposition parties- including SP, and BSP, opposed it, which resulted in BJP taking back 12 amendments, he said. Now there are only 3 amendments which Congress wants to be taken back.

BJP is against any retrospective benefit to farmers which Congress supports. The second amendment which Congress opposes is about the provision of not returning the acquired land to the original owner if not utilised within five years as per the current bill. Ramesh said that unless the BJP does not takes back what he termed as anti-people provisions of proposed bill, the Congress will not allow its passage in the Rajya Sabha.
