In Kerala, the Congress- led UDF secured spectacular victory over CPIM led LDF in the civic elections. UDF made inroads into many LDF strongholds from Panchayat to Corporation levels repeating its performance in the last Parliament election. UDF bagged Kochi and Thrissur Corporations while the ruling LDF managed to retain Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam corporations. For the coming five years, thirty nine municipalities of the state will be ruled by Congress-led alliance while the ruling LDF has won 18. However, no party got majority in fifteen municipalities. At the village Panchayat level also UDF has considerable upper hand by capturing power in 544 Panchayats while the LDF tally stood at 348. At the district Panchayat level also UDF has put up excellent performance by wining majority of them. BJP has improved its performance at different levels especially in Municipalities and Corporations compared to 2005 civic elections of Kerala. While the euphoric Congress-led alliance is sure to repeat the present success in the forthcoming Assembly elections, LDF state committee of Kerala is meeting to today to assess the defeat.
