The Congress has justified the government's decision to allow 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail sector saying it will benefit the farmers and consumers in a big way. Talking to reporters in New Delhi today, party spokesman P C Chako said the move will ensure removal of middlemen thereby helping the farming community.
Mr Chako accused political parties with adopting obstructionist ways to protest against the government's decision. He also said there is no compulsion for any state in this regard.
Asked whether the controversy over allowing the FDI into the retail sector will have any impact on the forthcoming assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, Mr Chako said that the party will convince the farmers.
