Congress has reacted sharply to government's decision to transfer Maharashstra Governor K Sankaranarayanan to Mizoram. Party leader Rashid Alvi said the move is unfortunate and an attempt by the government to weaken democracy. Speaking to AIR, he said the NDA government is showing scant respect for the Supreme Court judgement that a governor cannot be removed on the ground that he or she is out of snyc with the ideology of the ruling party.
K Sankaranarayanan was transferred to Mizoram late last night for his remaining tenure, which ends in 2017. A Rashtrapati Bhawan communique issued in New Delhi said that the 82-year-old Sankaranarayanan has been shifted to Mizoram and Gujarat Governor OP Kohli has been asked to discharge his duties.
