Congress begins 125th anniversary celebrations with PM emphasising to bring changes in tune with changing times

The prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today emphasised the need for resolving issues through dialogue and accomodating different ideologies. He said that only the Congress which believes in the policy of uniting society and the nation and not dividing them can meet the challenges of terrorism, communalism, naxalism and regionalism.<br/>He was speaking at a function to mark the 125th foundation Day of the Indian National Congress in New Delhi today.<br/>Outlining the various schemes for the welfare of the weaker sections and minorities, Dr Manmohan Singh appealed to the partymen to take the Congress closer to the common man. He said there is need to bring changes in the party to bring it in tune with the changing times. Dr Singh also emphasised the need to take the youth along while moving forward on the path of development and prosperity and emerge as a major power in 21st century.<br/>In her address, the Party President Mrs Sonia Gandhi described the Congress as a people's movement which freed the country from imperialism. Mrs Gandhi said that Congress of today has been greatly influenced by Indira Gandhji who protected the interests of the country without being pressurised from the powerful nations and became the voice of the poor.<br/>She also spoke of the vision of Rajiv gandhi enshrined in the 1991 manifesto, which became the foundation of the country's economic policies. She said, Congress is reflection of the expectations of the people. She said this relationship of the party with the people is the main strength of the congress.<br/>Later Dr Manmohan Singh and Mrs Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone of the Indira Bhawan, the Congress Headquarters to kick of the year long celebrations to mark the commemoration of 125 years of the formation of the party.<br/>Veteran Congress leader K Karunakaran inaugurated the 125th anniversary celebrations of the party in Thiruananthapuram today.<br/>The 91-year-old leader said it was his good fortune that he was able to work for an organisation like Congress. Speaking on the occasion, Karunakaran wanted Congressmen to work unitedly for strengthening the organisation and thereby the nation. Former ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair, Poetess Sugathakumari, KPCC President Ramesh Chennithala and a large number of Congress leaders from the state were present.<br/>Freedom fighters from the state were also honoured during the occasion. The celebrations were organised by the District Congress Committee which has planned year-long programmes.<br/>Commemorating the 125 years of Indian National Congress (INC), the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee, NPCC, today organized a formal programme at Congress Bhavan, where officials of the PCC and prominent congress leaders attended the programme. <br/>Reports of holding special programmes on the special ocassion has come in from all the districts. According to a release issued by NPCC General Secretary (Administration) Medokul Sophie, a year long programme has been chalked out by the AICC to commemorate the 125 years of INC party, which was formed on 28th December 1885 under the convener and pioneer ship of A O Hume, at Bombay. He mentioned that under the banner and active movement of the Congress party led by Mahatma Gandhi, India achieved independence on 15th August 1947. <br/>The release also mentioned that Indian National Congress came into being in Nagaland on 19th June, 1976 after the merger of the then Nagaland Nationalist Organisation (NNO) with the INC in the presence of D K Baruah, the then President of AICC and the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi during their visit to Mokokchung district of Nagaland. It further pointed out that with the merger; the Late Dr. Hokishe Sema was elected first president of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) along with some of the prominent members of NNO.<br/>
