A polio emergency has been declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo with nearly 100 deaths reported from the crippling disease, from the port city of Pointe Noire. The World Health Organization said hundreds of people have been hospitalized with paralysis associated with polio. Although polio usually strikes children, but most of the victims are at least 15 years old. The WHO, the United Nations Children’s Fund and the US Centers for Disease Control are working with the Congolese and Angolan governments on a vaccination campaign.
