Cong reigns supreme; BJP says division of opposition votes led to its debacle

The ruling Congress has stormed back to power in Arunachal Pradesh with a two-third majority in the 60-member Assembly. The party has bagged 39 seats and is leading in three constituencies. NCP has got five and BJP two. Ten seats have gone to others and is leading in one. The Congress is also poised to form Government in Maharashtra. In Haryana, the party has emerged as single largest party, short of six seats for an absolute majority.<br/><br/>In Haryana, the ruling Congress has won 40 seats in the 90 member Assembly. INLD has got 31, BJP 4, Shiromani Akali Dal and BSP one each, Haryana Janhit Congress six and Independents seven. Prominent winners include Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Kiran Chaudhary, Sampat Singh and Randeep Singh Surjewala of the Congress, former Chief Minister and INLD Chief Om Prakash Chauthala. Mr. Chautala has won from both Uchana Kalan and Ellanabad seats. His son Ajay Singh Chautala has bagged Dabwali seat. Kuldip Bishnoi of the Haryana Janhit Congress has won the Adampur seat. Jasma Devi, wife of former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal has lost. <br/><br/>In Maharashtra, the ruling Congress-NCP alliance has so far won 135 seats and is leading in eight seats in the 288-member Assembly. The BJP-Shiv Sena Combine has got 87 and is ahead in eight seats. MNS has got 13. Others have bagged 40 and are leading in one. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan won the Bhokar seat. The Ministers of the outgoing Cabinet who won include Narayan Rane, Chhagan Bhujbal Harshavardhan Shahajirao and Ajit Pawar. Union Energy Minister Sushilkumar Shinde's daughter, Praniti, has also been elected. President Pratibha Patil's son and Congress candidate Raosaheb Shekhawat won Amravati seat defeating Congress rebel Sunil Deshmukh by a margin of over 5,600 votes. Prominent losers include Vijaysinh Mohite Patil of NCP, leader of opposition in the Assembly, Ramdas Kadam of Shiv Sena, Poonam Mahajan of BJP, Vinod Kambli and Arun Gawli. Former Arunachal Chief Minister and Congress nominee, Gegong Apang lost the Tuting Yingkiong seat, which returned him seven times earlier. His son Omak Apang also lost Pasighat West. NCP Candidate and former Chief Secretary, Jomin Tayeng won from Dambuk Constituency. BJP's Tapen Siga has bagged the Daporijo seat. Lone woman Independent Candidate, Nang Sati Mein won from Namsai seat.<br/><br/>Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has asserted that his party would once again form government in the state. However, he admitted that the ruling party's performance in the state was not up to the expectations. <br/><br/>INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala, whose party staged a sort of comeback winning 31 seats as against nine in the previous polls, said that he would stake claim to form government in the state on the basis of the combined strength of the opposition and the support of Independents. He said the people of Haryana have rejected the Congress and its policies.<br/><br/>As the Congress did not get past the half way mark, Mr. Chautala said the State Governor should invite the INLD to form the government. He added that he is already in touch with opposition parties and most of the Independents. <br/><br/>Replying to a question, the INLD supremo said he is not averse to alliances with anti-Congress parties.<br/><br/>The BJP has described the election results in the three states are disappointing. The party spokesperson, Mr. Ravi Shanker Prasad told reporters in New Delhi that in Maharashtra anti incumbency votes were divided and MNS played a big role in damaging 40 seats for BJP and Shiv Sena combine. He said the Congress performance in Haryana was not satisfactory as it could not muster absolute majority. Mr. Prasad said defection of party MLAs in Arunachal Pradesh helped Congress. He said the party would discuss its shortcomings threadbare and address the issues for defeat.<br/><br/>The Communist Party of India has said the election results are on the expected lines. Speaking to AIR, CPI general secretary, Mr. A B Bardhan said people have rejected the communal forces and results are not surprising.
