Cong, NCP slam Raj Thackeray for remarks on new auto permits

On the second day of Maharashtra budget session, the opposition Congress and NCP slammed MNS Chief Raj Thackeray's remarks on non-Marathi speaking people getting auto rickshaw permits. The Opposition accused him of pursuing "hate politics" and demanded that BJP-Shiv Sena government take legal action against the MNS president.

Claiming that 70 per cent of new auto rickshaw permits were given to non-Marathi speaking people, Raj Thackeray, on the occasion of MNS's 10th foundation, had yesterday threatened that his party workers will set afire these vehicles if they are seen plying on roads. He had demanded that only sons of the soil should be given licences.

Congress spokesperson Al-Nasser Zakaria said Thackeray's "open threat to incite violence" speaks volumes about the BJP-led government's inability to reign-in "terror elements" while NCP spokesman Nawab Malik said there are Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) provisions under which he can be arrested.

Over this, Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde said that action will be taken against those who break law. Meanwhile, the opposition also staged noisy sit-in protest today holding banners on the steps of Vidhan bhavan over various issues including failure of Maharashtra government to tackle severe drought conditions, demand for complete loan waiver for drought-affected farmers and immediate steps to provide relief to drought-hit regions; regulation required for banning dance bar and also demanded resignation of state education minister Vinod Tawde in connection with alleged fake degree case.
