Confusion on taxi strike prevails in Mumbai today
Confusion on taxi strike prevailed in Mumbai today. As in some parts of the city like south Mumbai few taxis were seen plying on the road while the situation in suburban Mumbai was not the same.

Mumbaikars in suburban areas were seen struggling as hardly any taxis could be seen on the roads. Most taxis remained off the roads fearing violence.

A. Quadros, General Secretary, Mumbai Taximen’s Union claimed that they have called off the strike. Mumbai Auto Rickshaw-Taximen Union's chief Sharad Rao said that their union is also not on strike. He said their taxis are working in western suburbs and at the airport.

Mr. Quadros also informed that various taxi unions will hold a meeting this evening with the MMRTA authorities and the Maharashtra Transport Minister, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil to sort out the issue. The taxi union had gone on indefinite strike on Tuesday demanding for fare hike from Rs 14 to 16 and Rs 10 for every subsequent kilometer as the CNG prices have been raised in the state. However, the decision on increasing taxi fares is still pending.

The state transport minister had on Tuesday said that demand for taxi fare hike is completely illegal. Buses and local trains also looked crowded. Passengers outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at Santacruz and Sahar International Airport at Andheri continued to face difficulties due to the taxi strike. Meanwhile the Maharashtra Government is expected to take a formal decision on the auto rickshaw fare hike Wednesday evening.
