In Kerala, the Ernakulam District Sessions Court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to Soofiya Madani, wife of the People's Democratic Party [PDP] leader Abdul Nasar Madani. She was arrested recently in connection with the burning of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus at Kalamassery in 2005.
The court directed Soofiya to execute a bond for one lakh rupees and two sureties for a similar amount. The Sessions Judge, Mr D Pappachan ordered her not to move out of Ernakulam district until investigations are over. The judge also directed her to surrender her passport within one week.
Police claim that Soofiya played a major role in the conspiracy to torch the bus, carried out by PDP supporters in protest against the detention of Abdul Nasar Madani in connection with the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blast case. Soofiya's role came to the fore recently following the arrest of extremists having links with Pakistan's Lashkar-e-Toiba.
