Compulsory voting on national scale not viable: EC

<br/>The Chief Election Commissioner said it is not feasible to have compulsory voting in an election held on a national scale. He, however, said that the decision has to be taken by Parliament. <br/><br/>Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function to mark Commission's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, Mr. Navin Chawla noted that the country had a large section of unorganised labour and in case of a sick child, one cannot expect his mother to go and vote.<br/><br/>He said, Election Commission believed in promoting voter education and awareness.<br/><br/>The Chief of the Election panel refused to comment on the Gujarat Legislation making compulsory voting in the local body elections. He said that state election commission is an independent constitutional authority and one must respect its position. <br/><br/>Earlier, setting the tone for the day long debate, Mr. Chawla gave the details of the measures taken by the panel to manage the challenges posed to the commission, while holding elections in India. <br/><br/>Speaking to reporters on the sidelines, the Chief of Japanese Central Election Council, Prof. Keizo Sakata said that the authenticity of electronic voting machines has to be ascertained before introducing them in the electoral system of Japan. <br/><br/>He said, discussion on the issue is underway in his country. In an interview to our correspondent, the Deputy Secretary General of Commonwealth, Ms. Mmasegoa Masire Mwamba said that Commonwealth Secretariat also holding discussions on the use of Electronic Voting Machines and a final decision is yet to be taken.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, during the day long deliberations in the symposium, the representatives and heads of the election panels from various countries shared their views on making the electoral process more transparent and clean. <br/><br/>Most of the representatives hailed Indian Election Commission for holding polls in a most transparent and impartial manner.
