Compulsory voting not possible, reforms will continue: Gowda

The Lok Sabha today resumed discussion on a private member's bill seeking to make voting compulsory. The Compulsory Voting Bill,2014 was brought in the House by BJP member Jandardan Singh Sigriwal a few sessions earlier. In the resumed discussion, members generally welcomed the idea of compulsory voting but also raised questions on its practicability. <br/><br/> Replying to the discussion, Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said making compulsory voting in the country like India is not possible and also not feasible. He said, the spirit of voting among the people should come voluntarily and not by compulsion. Mr Gowda said, the right to vote also includes the right not to vote and the only way to increase voting percentage in elections is electoral reforms. He said, the Election Commission has taken several steps to create awareness among the people about voting rights. <br/><br/>He said, the Law Commission in its report has also said that making voting compulsory for the people is not possible in the country.Mr Gowda also assured the House that government <br/>would convey all the suggestions made by members to the Election Commission for consideration so that best practices could be adopted in electoral process.Later, on<br/> the request of the Minister, Mr Sigriwal withdrew the Bill.
