The government today said that it will bring a comprehensive Bill as soon as possible on the issue of land acquisition. The Leader of the Lok Sabha Mr. Pranab Mukherjee told the members that the interest of the farmers can not be jeopardised as they have an important role to play for the food security of the country. Responding to the concerns expressed by members across the political spectrum in the House over the issue of compensation for land acquisition and the firing in farmers in UP , Mr Mukherjee said that a GOM headed by Agriculture Minister Mr. Sharad Pawar is working on the Bill. AIR correspondent reports that Members strongly condemned firing on farmers and wanted acation against those reponsible for it. Yesterday the farmer agitation in Uttar Pradesh and police firing on them had disrupted proceeding in both houses of parliament leading to repeated adjournements. Today with the Spraker allowing the members to raise the issue , the question hour was virtually converted in to a full fledged debate on the issue of land acquistion that has often drawn strong reactions at one time or the other . Almost speaking in one voice members wanted the government to amend the existing Bill on land acquisition as existing bill enacted in 1894 needed to be changed. Members were of the view that land should not be forcefully acquired from the farmers , some felt that only the barren and uncultivable land should be acquired for public utility projects. Some members strongly objected to the land being acquired for housing and building townships.
