Fair trade regulator – Competition Commission of India- has imposed a penalty of over 52 crore rupees on Board of Control for Cricket in India for its involvement in anti-competitive practices. The Commission in its order has said that BCCI abused its dominant position and directed it to cease and desist from any practice in future denying market access to potential competitors.
The Commission said that the abuse by BCCI was of a grave nature. The complaint was filed against BCCI in November 2010 on issues related to IPL and a professional cricket league tournament conducted by it.
The complainant had alleged irregularities in the grant of franchise rights for team ownership, media rights for coverage of the league and award of sponsorship rights.
