In a significant move, the Council of Boards of School Education, COBSE, has unanimously agreed on a common curriculum for Science and Maths at senior secondary level by 2011.<br/><br/>At a meeting represented by 20 school boards, it was also decided that they will work towards a Common Entrance Test for admission in higher courses, including engineering and medicines by 2013. The move is aimed at bringing uniformity in the education system across the country.<br/><br/>The government is actively considering a common entrance test for admission into engineering, medical and commerce courses from 2013.<br/><br/>Addressing a meeting of the Council of School Board of Education (COBSE) in New Delhi today, the Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal said that this will smoothen the admission process. He said this will also reduce burden on students who are appearing in multiple-tests for admission into these sources.<br/><br/>The HRD Minister said the all-India level entrance test will be on the lines of SIT in the US. At the meeting, the COBSE said it has prepared a core-curriculum for senior secondary classes in Science and Mathematics subjects.<br/><br/>A similar core curriculum will be prepared in Commerce in three months.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that Mr. Sibal had in August last year pitched for a uniform core curriculum for Mathematics and Science for all school boards. He had said a core curriculum could pave the way for a common entrance exam for admission to professional courses.<br/><br/>The Human Resources Development Minister, Mr Kapil Sibal said that the core curriculam will be taught in the science stream in all schools.<br/><br/>A task force will be set up to formulate the modalities for this common entrance examination. The incorporation of projects and other activities oriented methods of assessment was also suggested.
