Committee to be appointed to look into number of biometric signatures required in UI card: Nilekani

The Chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India Nandan Nilekani informed that a Committee will be appointed to look into number of biometric signatures required in the Unique Identity card. He was speaking at the Platinum Jubilee of Indian Academy of Sciences in Bangalore today. The Committee will suggest whether Unique ID card should only have finger prints or also DNA sample, retina map and demographic fields, he explained. Nilekani also said that the card will not have information about person’s income, religion or gender particulars. The project is aiming at providing online ID authentication, prevent duplication and evolve safeguards for the data collected, he pointed out. The ID will help improve the quality of the public spending and delivery system, he felt. The first unique card will be issued within 18 months and half of the population would be covered by the next four years, he informed.<br/>
