Committee to assess actual infrastructural requirements of courts in TN

The Madras High Court has constituted a three-member committee to assess the actual infrastructural requirements of all courts in Tamil Nadu. The move comes three days after it rapped the state government for not providing the required facilities and directed that facilities be given in two weeks. On February 11, the Court had come down on the state Government not providing required facilities to lower courts in Chennai, telling it bluntly that it was not doing charity work by constructing court buildings and providing facilities. It had also directed government to provide all facilities in two weeks as it took up the issue as suo motu writ petition at the instance of High Court Registrar General, following Chief Justice M Y Eqbal's surprise inspection of Metropolitan Magistrate court at Georgetown in Chennai, where he noticed several deficiencies. A three judge Bench, comprising the Chief Justice and Justices P Jyothimani and T S Sivagnanam then took up the matter as suo motu and directed the Additional Advocate General, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate and Chief Engineer,PWD to visit the George Town Court to assess the requirements. When the matter came up yesterday before the Bench, the Chief Engineer filed an affidavit with the inspection report, with details of requirements, stating that furniture, drinking water, toilet facilities, prisoners’ room with toilets may be provided within two weeks.
