The three member committee appointed by the Supreme Court to look into mining irregularities in Goa today visited Shirgaon mine at Bicholim in north Goa amidst tight security. The committee was assisted by noted environmentalist Claude Alvares of “Goa Foundation” a non governmental organisation. The committee is scheduled to visit other mines in Goa . Earlier in the day the Chief Secretary met the three member committee and briefed them on several issues concerning mining. The committee will be in Goa till oct. 31 and is likely to submit its report to the apex court on Nov. 2.
In the meanwhile, the Goa Mineral Exporters Association and Goa Mining Association have decided to file an intervention application in Supreme Court to restrain resumption of mining in the state unless the recovery of 35,000 crore rupees loss is recovered from mining companies and those responsible for illegal mining in the state.
