Committee on Telangana to meet today; TSJAC calls bandh

The high-level committee headed by Justice B N Srikrishna on Telangana will hold its first meeting in New Delhi today. The meeting comes a day after the Government announced the terms of references for the five member committee which will submit its report by the 31st of December. <br/><br/>The seven-point terms of reference says that the committee will examine the situation in Andhra Pradesh with reference to the demand for a separate state of Telangana as well as the demand for maintaining the present status of the united Andhra Pradesh. It will also will review the developments in the state since its formation and their impact on the progress of different regions of the state. <br/><br/>Bandh is being observed in Telangana region today following a call given by the Telangana Students Joint Action Committee (TSJAC) protesting against the terms of reference set for the committee. The all party Telangana Joint Action Committee has extended support to the bandh, which include several pro-Telangana parties including the TRS, BJP and CPI. People are facing hardships as the public transport has been severely hit due to the bandh. Section 144 has been clamped for one week in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad as a precautionary measure in view of the bandh and protests. <br/><br/>The terms of reference for the committee has evoked mixed reaction among political parties in Andhra Pradesh. TRS leader K Chandrasekhararao has announced that he along with another Lok Sabha member and ten of his party MLA and one MLC would submit resignations today to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and State Assembly. He described the move as deceiving the people of Telengana. PCC president D Srinivas has urged all political parties and sections in the state to cooperate with the Centre to enable the Sri Krishna Committee to function in an impartial way and complete its task before time. <br/><br/>The Congress leaders from Telangana region who met in Hyderabad said they would take a collective decision about their future strategy after attending the all party Telangana Joint Action Committee meeting today.<br/><br/>TDP leaders from both Telangana and rest of the state have expressed displeasure over the terms of reference for different reasons. While leaders from Telangana region said the centre has completely changed the consultation process, party leaders from coastal and Rayalaseema Regions said the absence of consensus for the terms of reference is causing concern. <br/><br/>
