Government says with the commissioning of the plant of South Korean Steel major POSCO in Odisha, the steel production in the country will increase manifold. The plant will produce 12 million tones of steel annually. In a reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of Steel Beni Prasad Verma said the government has set up a target of two hundred million tones of steel production in the country by 2020. At present, India has 5th position in the world in steel production. He informed that as per data maintained by the joint plant committee, has showed that during the fiscal year 2010-11 per capita consumption of total finished steel was 55 kilogram in the country.
