A commission of enquiry has been ordered to probe the large scale illegal mining in the country. Replying to a short duration discussion in the Rajya Sabha today, Mines Minister B.K. Handique said there is sufficient evidence available on illegal mining taking place in the country. He said the government is ready for a CBI probe to this issue provided the Karnataka and Orissa High courts grant permission to this effect. The minister said to stop illegal mining, areas have been identified where mining cannot take place. He said no mining permission will be given in future in eco sensitive areas. Mr. Handique said that a new policy is on the anvil to curb this menace. He said state governments should use satellite imagery to locate where illegal mining is taking place. The minister informed the House that the revision on royalty is done every three years. The royalty revision resulted in tremendous increase in revenue. Handique said mining sector offers huge employment opportunities and all out efforts should be made to enhance this potential. He advocated use of modern technology to make the steel sector cost effective and expressed hope that the new steel plants being set up will use this.
