Commerce Minister in Pakistan for trade talks

The Union Commerce, Industry and Textiles Minister, Anand Sharma has said that the economic ties between India and Pakistan are important for strengthening the relations between both the neighbouring countries which would be taken forward with peace and brotherhood.

Before crossing over to Pakistan via Attari-Wagah Joint Check Post by road, today, for a four day substantive bi-lateral visit for taking the economic relations to higher level, Sharma told the media that he is going to Pakistan to boost trade relations. The Minister has gone there on an invitation from his Pakistan counterpart who had visited New Delhi in September, last year.

This is the first substantive visit of an Indian Commerce Minister after India’s independence. He is accompanied by over 100 Chief Executives from India. Soon after crossing over to the neighbouring country, he was received by Pakistan Commerce Minister, Makhdoom Amin Fahim. Both the Ministers also inspected the progress on the construction of second gate of the integrated check post at Wagah.

During his four-day visit starting today, the Commerce Minister would preside over the closing ceremony of the three-day long ‘India Show’, today, in which 400 participating exhibitors are showcasing the best of the Indian industry, cuisine and culture.

He would also jointly address a Business Conclave along with Pakistan Commerce Minister on February 14th. On 15th February, he along with a high level Inter-Ministerial delegation, senior officers from Ministries of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Finance and Heavy Industries would have bilateral talks with Pakistan Commerce Minister on a whole range of trade related issues. This would include the steps taken by Pakistan for grant of MFN status to India.

The investment policy regime of India which currently prohibits Pakistan investments into India is also likely to come up for discussion.

Anand Sharma would also address the 6th SAFTA Ministerial Council meeting in Islamabad before concluding his visit on February 16th.
